Carbon Storage of Leyte Sab-A Basin Peatland, Philippines
نویسندگان
چکیده
Leyte Sab-A Basin peatland (LSBP) is the second largest in Philippines and comprises 3,088 ha (31 km2). The study estimated C storage carbon sequestration capacity of peatland’s four (4) ecotypes, namely, swamp forest (SF), marshland (ML), agroforestry (AF), agricultural land (AL) using allometric equations. SF rendered highest downed wood C-stocks followed by AL AF. For litter C-stocks, AF highest, SF, ML, AL. root CO2 sequestered, C% ML with values ranging from 32-43 across soil peat depth, while ranges 29-34 C%, both 19-37 C%. LSBP stores 36.6 Tg 134.5 sequestered. This amount can represent 0.04% tropical carbon.

A community-based gastroenteritis outbreak after Typhoon Haiyan, Leyte, Philippines, 2013.
BACKGROUND Three weeks after Typhoon Haiyan, an increasing number of acute gastroenteritis cases were reported in Kananga, Leyte, an area where evacuated residents had returned home two days after the disaster. An outbreak investigation was conducted to identify the source and risk factors associated with the increase of gastroenteritis. METHODS A case was defined as any person in Kananga who...
متن کاملrockslide-debris avalanche on Leyte Island, Philippines: a catastrophic landslide in tropical mountain terrain
In February 2006, a disastrous rockslide-debris avalanche occurred in tropical mountain terrain, on Leyte Island, Central Philippines. Over 1100 people perished when the village of Guinsaugon was overwhelmed directly in the path of the landslide. The landslide was initiated by the failure of a 450 m high rock slope within the damage zone of the Philippine Fault where the rock mass consisted of ...

متن کاملStability of peatland carbon to rising temperatures
Peatlands contain one-third of soil carbon (C), mostly buried in deep, saturated anoxic zones (catotelm). The response of catotelm C to climate forcing is uncertain, because prior experiments have focused on surface warming. We show that deep peat heating of a 2 m-thick peat column results in an exponential increase in CH4 emissions. However, this response is due solely to surface processes and...
متن کاملAnemia of Inflammation Is Related to Cognitive Impairment among Children in Leyte, The Philippines
BACKGROUND Many studies have addressed the relationship between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and cognitive impairment, but none have evaluated the role of non-iron deficiency anemia (NIDA). One of the main causes of NIDA in developing countries is AI, largely due to infectious diseases, whereby iron is shunted away from bio-available forms to storage forms, making it less accessible for use by ...
